<P>The Mystical Evolution in the Development and Vitality of the Church is a work of profound theological and mystagogical importance in the history of the Church. This mammoth work of over 500 hundred pages (itself only the second volume) contains copious quotes from the Bible, Saints, Fathers, and Doctors of the Church, as well as classical spiritual writers. Aiming to describe the mystical theology of the Church as a whole and present to readers a guide in the mystical tradition, author Fr. John G. Arintero, O.P., does a remarkable job of doing so by making the work come alive with simplicity and understanding. Imbued with holiness, he has produced a veritable encyclopedia of what Saints and other mystic souls have told Christians from the beginning through the time of writing at the beginning of the 20th century.</P><P>Fr. John (Juan) Gonzalez Arintero was a Spanish Dominican priest who wrote in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works were numerous and, as befits a Dominican, were written at a high academic level. As a master of mystical theology, he was renowned as a spiritual director and preacher. He died in 1928 in the odor of sanctity, and his cause for sainthood is underway.</P>

<P>“Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you. Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.”</P><footer>Matthew 11:28–30</footer><P>Christ’s words ring true for this earthly life that we must endure in order to, hopefully, attain eternal rest with Him in heaven. Our fallen world is full of sufferings and struggles; from the everyday aggravations to the life-altering sorrows that we sometimes face. Yet, Christ assures us that His “yoke is sweet and [His] burden light.” This is so because He always helps us carry our crosses throughout this life and because the ultimate battle is already won, thanks to Christ’s love for us. Yet we must remain vigilant.</P><P>Saint John of Avila, the 34th Doctor of the Church, gave numerous sermons on this subject, in which he offers the consolation of Christ’s own example and that of saints, like St. Francis of Assisi. St. John never failed to instruct, edify, and challenge those who listened attentively to his sermons. Heir to the politically tumultuous Franco-Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, he grew up without a mother, as his father's marriage to her was annulled, and political intrigues and contending families and parties surrounded him. Well educated, handsome, and determined, Baldwin had a fatal condition: leprosy. The disease would not stop him, however, from being thrust onto the throne when he was only 13 years old. Throughout his rule, infighting in the royal court and intermural conflicts between competing branches of families continued to plague him, as well as external threats from the powerful Ayubbid dynasty under Saladin the Conqueror, who had surrounded the Frankish kingdoms. In spite of seemingly insurmountable odds, the crusader king kept his quarreling underlings in check, successfully (and quite unexpectedly) defended against Saladin, and mastered his own broken body, wracked by leprosy, which eventually left him blind and bereft of the use of his right arm and legs, all the while remaining in life-long unmarried chastity. The Classics Made Simple

<P>Leslie Audoen Rumble, known as "Fr. Rumble," was a priest and apologist from New South Wales, Australia. Born in 1892, he grew up in an Anglican family, but he converted to the Catholic Church. In 1924, he was ordained a priest for the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. He became famous for providing radio answers to questions about Catholicism broadcasted all over Australia and New Zealand. He also founded Radio Replies Press with Fr. Charles Mortimer Carty, an American priest from St. Paul, Minnesota, who had been performing a similar radio-apologetics program, the Catholic Radio Hour, as well as a street-preaching campaign, in the United States. (Fr. Carty was also known as a biographer of Padre Pio.) Fr. Carty spearheaded the American publishing operation, and the two priests became excellent "collaborators in the truth."
